{2 x 4} Pumpkins

Well we are officially ready for Halloween at our house! I love this time of year and always get so excited pull out my decorations! I spent last week making new pieces to add to my decor and arranging it to the way I want it. I'll share those pictures sometime this week! But tonight I wanted to share a super easy cute project! I made these last year at a craft night with some friends. My super cute neighbor hosted it and came up with this pumpkin project.

Here's what you need:

• any kind of wood you want to use: 3 blocks for small pumpkin, 4 blocks for large (small pumpkin is 5 in tall, large is 7 in) The blocks do not need to be smooth. As you can see from the photo mine were very imperfect, but that's what I like so much about them!
• orange paint
• stain
• dowels for stem
• ribbon and wire

1. Paint wood blocks orange. You don't need to worry about painting the bottom or the sides that you won't be able to see. Make sure they are completely dry before adding stain.
2. Stain dowels and wood blocks with foam brush or paper towel. For the pumpkin blocks I painted the stain on and wiped off with a paper towel leaving most of it in the cracks and dents.
3. We used a nail gun to attach the blocks together. You could also use liquid nails. Just FYI hot glue will not work :)
4. Hot glue on stem.
5. Add ribbon.
6. Twist wire around a pen or pencil and hot glue end in the ribbon.

And you're done! Super easy and very inexpensive! Enjoy!

Halloween Countdown

I made this last year for my girls and it was a huge hit! It was a fun way to countdown to Halloween. I put little treats and fun little toys like a pumpkin flashlight, mummy suckers, stickers, spider rings, sparkly pens and pumpkin decorating kits. I need to get going on my shopping to stuff it for this year! Enjoy!

Here's how I made it:

• Decide how big you want it and how many pockets you want on it (mine has 15 pockets)
• Sew black cotton in a big rectangle. Don't forget to add the ribbon at the top for hanging. I also added ribbon along the bottom for decoration.
• Cut felt for pockets.
• Stitch felt pockets on around both sides and bottom leaving opening in the top. I used a decorative stitch to dress it up.
• Add embellishments to each pocket.
• Hang from a fun bright witches broom.
• Fill with treats and toys and enjoy!

Crochet Along and a little about my Grandma

Crocheting reminds me of my grandma. She was amazing at it and I'm so glad today that I can say I learned to crochet from her when I was an older child. I remember sitting with her and her teaching me how to chain, single, half double and double crochet. She gave me a skein of yarn and I set off to make a blanket....it never turned out and ended up having a slanted edge so I gave up. I've only ever crocheted straight double crochet scarves. A few months ago I made a couple crochet flowers and hearts, but that's about it. Well I came across a fun Crochet Along on one of my new favorite blogs Maybe Matilda so I decided to join in! She has walked through each type of stitch with pictures and it's so easy to understand. You should join in to! We're making a cowl...perfect for winter! I chose a darling yellow...I've been so into yellow lately!  We started the pattern today and I'm so excited about my new cowl and can't wait to finish it. The best part...the entire time I'm crocheting I'm thinking about my amazing grandma! She was a do it yourself kind of lady and did what she needed to do to get things done. Even in her seventies you'd find her chopping her own firewood, mowing the lawn, canning food to fill an entire storage room, quilting and crocheting. One of my favorite gifts that I received from her was an 8x10 frame with a small picture of my grandma and grandpa in it and cutouts of things that reminded her of me and a handwritten note on the back. The frame was wrapped up in a quilt that she'd made me. There's nothing like being wrapped up in one of her quilts! At the time she taught me to crochet I didn't realize what a big impact this would have on my life and grateful I would be that I took the opportunity to learn from her. It really is the simple things and spending time together that is remembered the most. Miss her so much and can't wait to see her again! I hope I don't take advantage of what I can learn from those closest to me and pass it along to my family. I hope you'll do the same! Enjoy!

Paperclip Earings

In my last Show & Share features I featured some paperclip earrings. I was browsing around and found these paperclip earrings and immediately fell in love with them! I dug through my desk and found some paperclips. Grabbed some thread...wish I would have had floss in the color I wanted. Floss would have been way easier, but I wanted to use what I had on hand.

So here's what you need:
2 paperclips
earrings
floss
glue - use liquid stitch or tacky glue

Open all 3 sides of paperclips forming a triangle. Slide earring part onto paperclip.

Glue together ends of paperclip and begin wrapping floss around the
entire paperclip adding a dab of glue every so often.

Once you've covered the entire paperclip begin making the web like earring by wrapping in all different directions. On my next pair I would make sure to wrap long way in the beginning of wrapping. To finish it off I put a dab of glue at the top and wrapped the end around it multiple times.

This was so simple and took very little time to do. I love how they turned out and I'm so excited to wear them! I love earrings and these are so light weight you don't even notice they're there! I have plans to make more so I'll share those when I get them done! Enjoy!

Women's Sweater to Little Girl Dress

Hello friends! Can you tell I've been in the sewing mood? Or maybe it's clothing mood. I've been trying to hit the sales and stock up for my growing 3 year old. You can see the skirts I've made her from old button up shirts here and here. Why pay money if you can re purpose something for just a little bit of your time. I've had this sweater sitting in my closet for years. It shrunk up and has always been to short for my liking and so it's rarely been worn. Well I finally moved it to my DI box (Utah's version of Goodwill) I pulled it back out and decided to try and make a dress for my daughter. Here's what I did.

Start out with an old sweater

Cut the arms off at the shoulder

Decide how long you want the sleeves to be and use the cuff part of the arm. Make sure to cut it at an angle so the arm piece flows nicely into the shoulder. I laid the arm on the sweater (photo above) and cut.

Put new arm piece right side out inside your sweater and line up edges, pin and sew around the arm to attach the new arm piece and down the side of the sweater to close up the old arm opening.

Since this sweater had the long "v" in the front I stitched that together on each edge leaving just enough space to have the dress fit over her head.

So what do you think? It was definitely a learning experience and this sweater was hard to work with and I had a lot of fraying and unravelling, but it has held up in the wash. I think it turned out super cute and looks even cuter on...my daughter was having a 3 year old moment wouldn't let me take a picture of her in it. The flower is one of their hair clips I made a few years ago and I just clipped it on. Hopefully I'll be able to get a picture of her in it and share it with you soon! Enjoy!
